Slackware partitions and lilo
 

Hello, I am going ahead with a full partition. Was going to go with PC Linux then I decided I would test myself with Slackware 12 first.

I noticed Slackware says my root partition does not have be much bigger than one or two gigs. On the other hand PC Linux was recommending three partitions for basic home setup.

SWAP twice size of ram. Mine is 512 MB and i am giving it 1.5 gigs

Then PC Linux says half total size of hard drive for root and rest for /home.

My total disk space is 120 gigs and i am not dual booting.

I downloaded the Slackware iso. When i try to install full packages it asks for another disk. Where or what should i install to continue with this.

The system also says lilo needs to be installed after completion of copying files. i end up with os not found.

Can anyone provide some ideas? Should i just go with PC Linux for now?

Are there more easier instructions for installing slackware.

Also is there any where where i can download cfdisk?

cfdisk comes with the slackware cd 1, I suggest you read the slackbook http://www.slackbook.org/

I had same boot problem with pc linux and realized i needed a boot partition. I will try that later.

I am wavering between going back to pc linux. Maybe someone can let me know the minimum system requirements for slackware while at the same time allowing all the multimedia codecs, samba, wine/crossover etc.

My system is Pentium III 650 MHz, RAM 512 MB, 8 MB Video, 60 gig ide 7200 rpm hdd.

This is dell latitude laptop.

The pc linux seems to be a tight os which has everything u need without being too bloated or heavy. Is Slackware as light?

Well... It depends on several things, but if you're going to have 3 partitions: /, swap and /home (which is the simplest and most practical veriant), you should give the / partition 6 to 10 gigabytes. I usually make it 10G.
Yeah, that's reasonable. If you're pressed for space, though, you can make it just 1 gig.
No, more than 10 gigs for / is unnecessary. Only if you're going to use your box as a server, and even then you'd probably want /usr and /var on separate partitions.
Slackware 12 comes on three installation CDs (and three more source CDs) or on one DVD. You need all three installation CDs, download and burn them.
You'll have cfdisk when you boot the installation CD. For the LILO problem you need to provide more information, though.

You have a better computer then mine, and slackware runs fast on my computer(p3 600 mhz, 256 mb of ram, 15 gb harddrive), so I don't think you should be concerned. If you plan for a full installation, then you should allow for at least 4 gb harddrive space, which is recommened. Read the Slackbook, and you should be all right

it only needs the first 2 cds

IIRC, the third disk contains KDE internationalization stuff?
