Slackware installation alongside windows 7

I have used many distros of linux for fun before but mostly in GUI. So I do not really know much of linux. I have installed before Fedora, CentOS, OpenSuse, Mint, Ubuntu, Scientific linux etc. This time I am trying to really learn linux and opting for slackware. Is it possible to creat dual boot option with win 7 and slackware? I would be needing windows and can not have only slackware.

Hi & Welcome to Linux Questions-:)

Yes.

Depending on the size of your HDD on your Windows machine you can install Slackware alongside of your Windows 7 installation.

You will first have to shrink your Windows 7 partition to make room for your Slackware install.

Open the Disk Management console by typing diskmgmt.msc at an elevated command prompt.
In Disk Management, right-click the volume that you want to shrink, and then click Shrink
Volume.

Once your done that you can install Slackware.

Keep in mind that after your fresh installation of Slackware you'll boot into it in command line mode only envirnment. "Don't panic" you will be able to boot into Windows after you set up Slackware. I can walk you through that when your ready.

Once your have Slackware set up you will need to edit the lilo.conf file to make LILO aware of your Windows os.

Welcome! How did you 'run/install/do' Linux before? (UEFI 'bios'?)
A 'safe&easy' option to experiment with is VirtualBox.
Slackware is a GREAT choice for learning 'the REAL stuff';)
(I vaguely remember it or derivative giving me a choice of grub/lilo, I think)

If you plan to install Slackware or any Linux with windows, I would also suggest that you run Disk Defragmenter before resizing your windows partition. Then shrink the partition from Disk Management and reboot windows and run chkdsk. You should run chkdsk any time you modify a windows partition. You might also want to back up any personal data that is important to you before making these changes as there is always the possibility of data loss when modifying partitions.
