Slackware Gnome keyboard settings

I beg your pardon but I am a complete beginner.

I just installed Slackware 9.1 with the GNOME desktop, and I have a little problem: when I am in text mode, the keyboard map is correct (my map is qwerty/it, so I have all the characters like עאטלש), but when I start the desktop environment and try to type something (in a shell or in AbiWord or in any other application) it is not correct any more.

How can I setup the correct keyboard for the desktop?

Thank you

Check file /etc/X11/XF86Config
@Core keyboard's InputDevice section
you must have a line like this

Option "XkbLayout" "it"

If you have something different change as above (you might have "us" or something else.)
Of course "it" stands for italian map
