slackware - gnome - fullsceen - minimize

My problem is probably really newb, and I would like to state that I have searched this forum and other places for an answer, but came up with nothing. Perhaps it is because I am looking for the wrong things....so here is my problem.

I am currently running slackware 9.1 with dropline-gnome. I would like to know how (if possible) to be able to "minimize" quake3 from fullscreen and maybe make it minimize to the taskbar/tray..or atleast take focus away from it so that i can answer IM's and such if i am not currently playing and want to save my place on the server. I have tried doing <alt>-<enter> but that just takes it from fullscreen->windowed..and that causes my mouse to become very slow, also it switches so fast that i cannot make it lose focus...I am forced onto the q3 window and cannot leave it. The only way i can get away from it is if i move my mouse quick enough to switch workspaces or click on something else for focus.

I have tried using the Gnome keyboard shortcuts...which do not work for me. they'll work fine with any other window but not with games such as quake 3.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Have you tried Alt-Tab? That normally works.
