Question Slackware and Debian - when does WIFI card starts broadcasting its MAC?

I am working with those 2 OSes and would like to know when my internal Wifi card starts broadcasting its MAC address? When it starts looking for networks , when the corresponding driver starts in OS? Or perhaps when I connect to a particular network?

I think it's when it starts looking for networks. BTW, you can make the MAC anything you want with ifconfig. I use a little script to generate a random MAC every session.
