Slackware 8.1 xfree86/xserver
I have slackware installed, right now i'm using winXP since i recently reformatted for some various issues (damn you MS) anywho. I'm sorta in a rush i'll get back to this soon. Well when i was using slackware, I got the "TEXT - ONLY " after I booted up, I am currently familiar with redhat 8.0 and i'm used to the "EASY " setup. Guess i was kind of caught out of my deal there. But when i went to setup xfree86 I tried EVERYTHING! wtf Everything i tried it. and still nothing, the closest i got was to when a screen would come up freeze, shut down and go to command (the text only). So does anyone have any suggestions to what I should do?

any error messages to give us a slight chance of knowing what's going wrong?

Well, it says "XSERVER CRASH " and it starts scrolling a lot of other mess all over the screen before i get to read it MOST likely giving me the problable reason for the crash, it says Xfree86 wasn't configured properly. So I apparently went back and did it again.. Same thing happend.. I don't know what to do , I'm guessing that I probly have to install my video card. ;[

Welcome to Slackware! It's not a distro that does anything for you--you have complete control.
I had a much longer post here with more details, but when I clicked submit, I wasn't logged in and lost it. So, I'll shorten it down but have the same info: Get all your hardware makes/models drivers (vid card), mouse protocols, monitor Horiz. and Vert. refresh rates/frequencies (can be found in owner's manual or do a search at G4L aka www.google.com/linux ). Next, type the following as root into your terminal: xf86config This will walk you through setting up X. If you have any problems or questions, let us know. :D |
Oof yeah, I got it setup right now and i'm currently using it !! :) for some reason i love it more than I did rh8. I Just didn't like being babied around like that and carried through problems, it gave me stress and a brain work out when i was sitting there infront of a blank screen with "root@blahblah~#"
But some how it sorta made me follow into xf86config :P I dunno how Just found it.. Well thanks for the warm welcome; I hope more users try out this awesome distro *From my opinion*. |
