Slackware?
 

first of all....hello everybody i'm new here!:D
I have a question about distros. I'd like to install a linux distro on a already used HD of about 8gb. I'm quite newbie with Linux i just tried a bit knoppix...many people suggested me to install mandrake 10 official but i heard it is easy to install but also a bit bugged and not very stable after using it and customizing it.
So i wanted to know if Slackware is really hard to configure and to install. I read a guide for the installation of Slackware and i dont think it is very difficult, but i heard it is also hard to set up the hardware because of the lack of graphical wizards...is it true? :confused:
And what about fedora core 2?:confused:
And knoppix? :D I tried the live cd version but i dont know if the HD install is easy and stable..

My config is: athlon 1800@1500 on Asus a7v333, 256DDR, GF4mx440, modem USB ericsson B-Quick hm120dp (is it supported by all the distros?how can i set it up? i'd like the modem to work because i use internet very much) , mouse USB logitech mini mouse.

It's not so much that it's hard, as that requires that you know something about your hardware.

Whether its difficult depends on your perspective. Certainly there are install guides for it that can make your life so much easier if you take the time to do some reading before attempting it.

It's definitely worth the effort.

I didn't find it difficult to install at all, you just need to read up on it before starting, since you know all ur hardware then you should have no problems

The slackware Book on their page gives a complete walkthrough on installing

once you have an understanding of Linux, Slack is a simple install, imo. however, if you know nothing about it, it will involve a lot of reading, and patience.

you can also get info on the knoppix HD install at www.knoppix.net - I've tried it, and was very pleased. there is some knoppix-specific configuration to do post-install, but nothing too difficult.

one thing you may want to read up on is the USB modem - I don't have one, but I've seen a lot of people having problems with them. if it works in Knoppix that's a big help.

I am another noob, and I just finished my slackware 9.1 installation with relatively few issues. As long as you know what you have for HW, it is not that bad. Having tried other distros in the past, and gotten turned off to linux by them, I can say that so far (about 3 days of constant use) I like what I see in slackware-I am a long time Windows sysadmin, so uttering those words alone is a big step for me...I would suggest running the menu driven installation when you do, though, as I had problems with the full install no prompts- it may have been my ISOs, but when I ran the prompted install, everything went smooth...

Jumped into Slack when I first started using linux, and no problems. Just finished a new 9.1 install tonight for a buddy and no problems. Slack is great!

i havent decided yet between FC2 and slackware, i like the new kernel 2.6.x and the new packages in FC2 and i like it because it's noob friendly...
But i've seen it has some major bugs...
so i dont know, if u guys will see me in the slackware forum u'll know my decision :D
