Slackware 13.1 - Help
 

I am fairly new to linux, I have learned a bit in school but only worked with Fedora. I have to learn it for a job.

I am trying to manually compile a kernel, but to do so I need to download it, but netconfig even as root user is not found, I tried the setup command and it works but as soon as the system is reset I lose the settings.

I download the tar file listed above..and when I try to tar it..the OS freezes, and this happens with fedora as well. When I reset the tar file is gone and all previous settings I set prior are lost..

I am currently using virtualization to run Linux, (VMware Player) and have been googling solutions for about 8 hours and am totally stumped.

By the way---

Your title calls about Slackware 13.1, while you run Fedora on VM, but your problem is all about "compiling the kernel" however netconfig did not do so you setup command: all in all, I do not exactly understand *how* and *where* to help you.

If you want to run Slackware you can download an iso image here, burn and install: You don't need to compile the kernel, but you can play it later when you have at least one native Gnu/Linux running. Don't compile kernel running as virtual.

Next time please make things simple to understand. Good answers only come from good questions. So please ask the question with perspicuity and simplicity.

I am sorry, I am working with multiple distros in a virtualization environment (Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slackware) so that I can better understand Linux and work toward a job.

I am currently using Slackware, I have the ISO installed the reason I ask about kernel compiling is that I need to understand how to complete said task (amongst other things) and so far it is not working in either Slackware or Fedora. I am mainly working with slackware so I can fully avoid the GUI.

Both Fedora and Slackware have the same issue with freezing when trying to tar the kernel file and when the OS is rebooted all changes made are wiped out.

But the main slackware problem I am having is even as root user I am not able to use the 'netconfig' command (netconfig: not found) in order to set up my dynamic IP address.

I apologize for the original post being scattered and not making any sense, I hope this straightens it out.

do you have the network-scripts package installed on your Slackware? netconfig is part of that package
