It might be that the driver for your graphics adapter is unable to go above 1024x768. I know the vesa driver cannot. If you have an Nvidia or ATI card try installing the drivers for that. Also try running xorgsetup; it's a nice ncurses setup tool that makes a good basic xorg.conf

Make the following changes to:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "My Monitor"
HorizSync 31.5-48.5 change it to 30-83
VertRefresh 50-70 change that to 56-75
EndSection
and also change this:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
from
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
to
Modes "1280x1024/75Hz" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
I verified on the LG site to get the proper Honriz and vertic refresh rates for that particular model of screen.
But for the second mod, Be sure that your monitor supports that setting of 1280x1024 at 75Hz.
That should do what you want. When you startx after moding xorg.conf and it is not the resolution you want, if you use gnome or KDE, you should within those desktop manager be able to change the resolution to what you want.

As Nis said, I don't think he is going to get that resolution with the vesa driver.

You are right Netizen, I havent paid enough attention to that.
But still, even when you use the right driver, some time you need to manually edit the xorg.conf file to match the specs of the monitor because it is not setted correctly by default in the conf file.
So I think that both changes needs to be done, the settings for the monitro and most importantly the selection of the right driver for the card.
Union is strenght! Two heads is better than one! ...not always tho.

It was a correct suggestion to change xorg.conf. Here is mine, and it matches exactly.
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "L1710S"
DisplaySize 340 270
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection
I use it with standard FC3 without ATI drivers, and it works in 1280x1024, 75
