Slackware 10.0 - no internet access and other question
Hello,
I fortunately managed to install Slackware 10.0, everything went fine... I managed to start my ADSL via "adsl-setup" and then "adsl-start", the connection is on, because I can see it on the modem that "act" diode blinks for some time as well as "adsl-status" shows some RX and TX packets going in and out. So my question is: what is the problem with the fact that I cannot browse anywhere, Pan (newsreader program from Slackwere) sends such an info"Handshake failed: error reading form socket, NNTP error: cannot read form socket". So, what should I do in order to browse the net and so..? The second problem... I assume that I need network access to solve it and that's why this is the second question. In Slackware 10.0 there's a software called Totem - it is a multimedia player. I tried to play mp3's with it but with no result (won't play, no error msgs, simply it takes no action). So, what would you sugges as an alternative mp3 player? XMMS? How to install it.. I was previously using Knoppix with it "apt-get"... ... if you can point me to the relevant link, I'd be very grateful... Third question... I need to write - not only read form NTFS file systems on my harddrives, I was trying to make a screenshot and then save it to the "fat-d" but there was problem with a permission to write to parent directory. How to check these perimissions and how to change them? Fourth question :-) Well, looks like that sound subsystem sees my Terratc Aureon 7.1 Space (VIA ENVY 24HT), however when I want to test sound there's still silence. My assumption that it sees this sound card is based on the fact that in ALSA mixer there's a clearly marked tab "Terratec Aureon...". So, where could the problem lie? Fifth question :> I have a SCSI CD-ROM (Plextor Ultraplex 40max) but looks like Slackware doesn't see it. I selected a kernel with SCSI support ("SCSI", not SCSI2 nor3, the first one from SCSI-suporting kernels from the list in Setup). What could be the problem here? How to check what kind of hardware support is compiled into kernel? Thanks in advance and best regards, |
That's a lot of questions to try and solve in one thread. I think it's possible problems two and four are linked. Try launching Totem with a command and then play an mp3 and see if it says anything useful in the terminal. Good luck

Thanks 4 reply...
How do I do this.. for example when I have any_name.mp3 ...? I mean the syntax... Greetz |
I meant run Totem. Just enter the word totem then open the playlist and navigate to the song you want to play. I would expect it to give an error about permissions for things in /dev or somesuch. There's nothing worse than not having an error message. You can specify the track at the command line, but you have to put quotes around the trackname if it has spaces in it, like so
Code:
totem "/home/andy/save/music/Brad Paisley - I'm Gonna Miss Her.mp3" |
The output from console after typing "totem" is..
Code:
root@darkstar:~# totem |
Ok... the problem is gone... installed XMMS and it works fine.
But one more question... I dwl tar with XMMS, decompressed it to a folder on desktop and run it from there, should I install it somehow or can I just put it into any folder? If so then would it be somewhere in the /usr ?? Greetz :-) |
