Slack8 questions

It is almost 3am and I thought I'd ask these questions so that I don't try and rack my brain and start searching all over the web for my answers.

I just finished my install of Slack8, after what was the dumbest issue I've had in a long while. (Hint: When you mget the files for the various packages, don't use *.* because you'll miss the disk* and tagfile files. lost hours on that one heh)

So, as I browse with Netscape under KDE I have come across a few questions:

1. Roller on Mouse.
How can I activate the roller on my ps/2 mouse?

2. Screen Savers
None of the defaults seem to work (except for the Blue Screen of Death hehe). I've tried both the GL and non-GL and in the preview box it is almost always black. I am running 1024x768x64k.

3. defaulting to load KDM upon login.
I may have figured this one out, but want to be sure. I simply created a .login file in the home directory of root with the launch command for KDE. Haven't rebooted/relogged yet to test it. Is this correct? (on a basic level)

4. Sound?
Can't seem to figure out how to get sound to work, haven't really delved into it. Mobo has integrated sound.

that's about all i can think of now. I'm sure i'll have more in the coming days.

Thanks in advance!

1) You need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config so that your mouse config (under Input) looks something like:
[code]option "Protocol" "PS/2"
option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

The ZAxisMapping is what actually makes it look for the wheel. You milage with the wheel in different applications will vary, works fine in most thing. I think Netscape has some issues, but Mozilla is find for me.

2) Pass - sorry I don't really use KDE

3) Na - you want to edit /etc/inittab to change your default run level to 4. Have a look at the file, its the first non-commented line in the file. You'll need to reboot for this to take effect. You'll probably also want to look at /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to see what will actually get executed at this run level I think it defaults to KDM which is what you want.

4) Slackware doesn't have any nice sound config tools that I've come accross. You will need to know the type of sound card you have, then find out which module it needs. You can try initially loading the module from the command line using modprobe moduleName and see if its there already. If this doesn't work then you'll need to recompile your kernel to get the support. Post the type of chip used on the MoBo and I'm sure someone can tell you what module to use if you're not sure.

Thanks for the help! (btw I absolutely loved Bristol when I visited some friends there this past summer)

I'll try and find out the details on the soundchip, it's not obvious to me when I look at the mobo.

more questions

ok got a few more questions.

it looks as thought my X is running the fbdev drivers, which is preventing me from setting the screen resolution/colors that I want.

I have a Riva 128ZX video chip (8mb ram, STB Velocity 128ZX is actual card name) which I know can support 1280x1024x32k colors which is the resolution that I would like to use.

When I set the value for vga in the lilo.conf to 793 (which according to the XF86Config file is the setting for the above resolution/colours) nothing changes from one boot to the next. It always seems to boot to 1024x768x64k.

I tried forcing the monitor refresh rates to those listed in its manual for 1280x1024 but that has just given me 1 headache after another. Took 1+ hour to recover to the point where X would start after finally conceding and re-running setup to reconfigure

I also tried setting it via the KDE control panel to no avail.

The settings for the mouse that were suggested above don't seem to do anything for my roller.

any suggestions would be great!

If you are editing lilo.conf, you need to re-run lilo to make the changes take affect. Just type lilo or /sbin/lilo. You can also run liloconfig and try using it to set the video setting. You'll have to go through some options you already have configured, but just use what you used at install and change what you want and then see if that helps the console res. As for X and the GL screen savers the glx driver needs to be being loaded. It should say in XF86Config near the top something like load=glx. In most cases you'll just need to download linux specific drivers from your cards vendor. As for the mouse, is it USB? If it is, open the file:
It'll help you through things too...If it's usb you'll notice you'll have to edit your /etc/rc.gpm (easy one) and your XF86Config (easy also) and set not to PROTOCOL="PS/2" to "ImPS/2"...
I'll have more idears as i wake up here...
