slack printing
 

I've been working on getting printing up on my Slackware 8.1 server, but to no avail. I have made progress in that CUPS does not come up with the 'client-error not found' message anymore (after uninstalling lprng in the Package Manager - a tip from another thread). Going through the printer install wizard seems to be fine (through Control Center -> Printing Manager in KDE), even to where it properly detects the Epson C62 on parport0. I end up using the Epson C60 driver (I can't find a C62 ppd) which I've read is fine to use, but I get no response from the printer when I try to print a test page. I also installed a raw printer to the same port and it prints out the printer code just fine. Oh, I'm running CUPS 1.1.18 in Slackware 8.1 with a 2.4.18 kernel.

I get no response with the test printer option with any version of cups greater than 1.1.14, atm I'm using cups 1.1.18 and I still get no response from the test printer option, however I can print from applications and adjust my printer settings, open /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps in either konqueror or kghostview, click the print button and see what happens.

well, that actually wasn't the case in my situation, it wouldn't respond to anything, even printing out of programs and such. I've actually given up, and currently use Mandrake as my server. Even though it's alot slower and more cumbersome, it's all I have the patience and time for. Maybe with the next version of Slack I'll tinker with it, but until then, I give up. :-/

edit: Slack is still my primary OS on my main rig. It's my favorite distro, just printing in it has caused me to come close to insanity, so until someone writes a tutorial or fix on printing in Slack, it's going to remain my gaming OS and only that.

There is somewhat of a conflict of LPRng and CUPS. Is the driver supported in CUPS? I would just try to disable CUPS or remove the package, set your printer to be default, and try to manually print a file using the lpr command:

lpr *document

I have a lexmark z23, whose drivers are built into the second CD of mandrake, and yet CUPS doesn't support it. It works fine with lprng

One other thing, as your running cups-1.1.18 are you aware that you also need to install espgs?

I had removed lprng because of a conflict I read about between it and CUPS. Can lpr share a printer through Samba? The only reason I was using CUPS was because that's what mandrake used, and it worked. I don't mind setting up lprng at all. Should I add the printer through the Printing Manager in X, or use the lpr console commands? I will reinstall slack if you guys think it can work. I just had a stressful week and ran out of patience. I believe I gave up too early.

Aussie, no I did not install espgs, I had no clue. I didn't see it documented in the CUPS install documentation. Maybe I missed it? If lprng will share a printer through samba, I might as well just use that. The simpler the better! :)

espgs used to be includd in cups, but starting from cups-1.1.15 it was made into a seperate package, cups won't work without it.

Leave Mandy as is. Try my tutorial near the end of page on your main rig. It works perfectly for me and my friend.

installing CUPS and ESPGS from the slackware extras directory on www.slackware.at fixed it! I could not believe how easy CUPS is to use when avoiding KDE's Control Center and using http://locahost:631 !
