Slack 8.1 iso checksum question
 

I am having more trouble with slack 8.1

I suspect my download is no good. I burned the image to cd and installed. Booting and so forth was fine but any attempt to configure X (XF86Config, xf86config) declared a missing file ...

How do I use the checksum to see if my iso is ok or not ?

In Linux, do

md5sum *.iso

In Windows, get md5summer from download.com

If you get that far, I doubt your iso is bad. I think you're new to Slack and don't know where and what.

For Slack, do

xf86config

to set up X. Post the error here.

BTW, did you select ALL when asked what packages to install?

I've used zipslack a bit, installed X many times on many different computers under zipslack.

This is my first time with 8.1 and a proper linux filesystem.

The error is

xf86config : error while loading shared libraries : libXext.so.6 : cannot open shared object file : no such file or directory

I did a full install, all components. Strange things are happening - for example, upon boot I do not go straight to shadow, I get this (sample of how things pan out after boot) :

Init-2.05a# : login // I have to login ... so I do, as root
.
.
root@(none) : // Script is running
bash : cat : command not found
bash : id : command not found

.
.

at this stage a lot of commands are not found. Shutdown (as well as reboot) for example ...

I can see X stuff ... /etc/X11 is full, for example ...

I'm *not* setting up zipslack - I've already done so many times, and set X up under it many times too. I've used slack a fair bit, as zipslack, on a FAT32 partition. I've even migrated a zipslack build across to an ext2 partition.

I'm having trouble with "slackware-8.1-install.iso" which I downloaded using a 56kb dial up over three days. I burnt the image to a 700MB cd-r.

I booted from this cd-rom, made ext2/linux swap partitions with it, and used the setup program to do a *full* install of *all* packages. Once this was done, I booted using a floppy with bare.i kernel, 2.4.18, which is the kernel version slack 8.1 uses.

Things should be cool, but they are not. At this stage I am ready to blame either :

a) A faulty cd-r
b) A bad download
c) Damaged hdd

I am also prepared to accept my limited experience might be a factor, but at least you should -rtfp- before telling me to -rtfm-.

Was a bad image burn to cd-r.

The bad burn was stuffing things up left right and centre and still I could login to a severely crippled build. Quite amazing.

I did a reburn and everything is sweet.
