Skype doesn't appear in panel after launching?

After the latest update manager was run. Skype no longer appears in my panel when launched. A window opens to log in, but if I close that window skype disappears instead of minimizing to the panel like it used to. When I click the launcher it tells me there is another instance of skype running. (oh really?) Where?

TIA

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the notification tray a windows thing? Being relatively new to linux... I thought they were called panels (please explain the difference because as far as I can see everything happens in the panel)... Navigating to Applications > Internet > Skype then right-click and select add this launcher to "panel". It then placed the Blue skype icon in the top panel. When you click on said icon (I have it set to auto login) A skype status icon (green=available, white=offline, etc...) used to show up on the same panel. If I clicked on the status icon my contacts would open... It (status icon) no longer appears after logging in, and when I close the window (skype) after login it disappears entirely never to be seen again...

I figured this out

Ubuntu 10.04 does not have the "notification area" added to the top panel by default. To see your skype instance (and probably some other stuff) right click on the top panel, click "Add to panel" and choose "Notification Area". Ba boom.

I think they are trying to replace it with "Indicator Applet" which works for some programs (like Transmission)

Actually, when I first upgraded, I did have both in the top panel (must have been a hold over from karmic). For some weird reason they just disappeared. I have them back now! (Hooray!) I don't know how many times I have skipped over that thinking it didn't apply to what I needed... That's what I get for thinking!

The Indicator applet as far as I can tell only gives you an icon for evolution and volume control... can you add to it?

Thank you, just what I needed!
