SIS 7018 sound card not working on mandrake 10
 

HI, My sis 7018 sound card isnt working, im running mandrake 10 and using gnome 2.4. ive run alsaconf and sndconfig and it still doesnt work. when i click on the auido controll it says 'no audio device' and 'couldnt open mixer device /dev/sound/mixer'

Ive heard enabling ACPI for the card might help but i havent got a clue how to do this.

Any helpwould be appreciated as the sound problem and a few other niggles is starting to drive me back towards windows (arrrrrrgggggg) so i need help before i rejoin the dark side.

i had a look on that site and the card didnt appear on the supported or unsupported list. I know that it does work on the debian distro if thats any hel. ive also read somewhere that using a vanilla kernel can help, will it? if it would where would i get it from and what would i need to do with it after i downloaded it

big_rees; generic driver sounds good. at least it will get u going and not stuck where u r at. give it a try. even if SIS does not have specific for u r device just the generic , if it works it works. right! go for it straight from the
horse`s mouth most time brings a winner. and am not a track hound either.

are you shure the 7018 is your card? I have a sis motherboard and it lists my card as that even tought it is not. I get audio but it comes throught the mic port. does xmms play but you cant hear anything?

I'm 99% sure its the right card, but what is the one that you actually have and it might be worth configuring it for that. Its on a laptop, i had a delve inside and i couldnt find anything on the mobo which indicated the sound card.

when i try to do anything which uses sound ie alter the mute level or play an mp3 an error message comes up saying it failed to initalise the sound so im sure its not picking anything up. Ive also tried disableing the sound in the bios, rebooting enabling the sound again and that didnt work.

short of throwing it out the window and seeing if gravity can fix it, im out of ideas !!!

big_rees; acknowledge that laptops have limited space. ? where is card located. bear in mind since they operate in frequency that maybe problem,
could u relocate in diff slot. (as u read ) i,m thinking tower.sorry.

I cant move the soundcard its truly onboard, I'm thinking of changing the Distro, I know it works out of the box in debian. does anyone know how easy it is to use? I'm on mandrake 10 at the moment.

Does your Card appear in /proc/asound ?

So ls -l /proc/asound ?

ive had a look in my proc folder and there isnt a sound folder in there. I'm guessing this could be a good part of the problem. Any ideas what to do next??

Well the folder is not called sound but asound.
So cd /proc/asound fails ?

What shows lspci ?
and what pnpdump ?

when i did the pnpdump it went through loads of ports and at the end 'no boards found came up'

OK. The card is recognized. Does dmesg schom any errors during boot ?
What is th eoutput of lsmod ?

By the way: Please confirm that there isn't a /proc/asound directory (asound stands for AlsaSOUND)

BY the way:

can you please load the trident module:

modprobe snd-card-trident and test the sound using XMMS.
Set up XMMS to use ALSA.

i have got the /proc/asound folder, i miss read ur first post.

i cant copy and paste frrom a terminal, i tired Ctrl C and it didnt work..

i ran dmesg and pages of stuff came up the first 3rd of the stuff was along the lines of

FAT : Directory bread (block 512) failed
end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 545

the number change from (block 497) to (block 528) and go through about 5 cycles and the other 'sector' number range from 529 to 560 and go through a similar number of cycles

i'll paste the lsmod here when i can

when i used modprobe snd-card-trident the follwoing came up
FATAL: Module snd-card-trident not found
