SimplyMepis and screen resolution

Installed SimplyMepis from a CD in a book called Point and Click Linux. Well it was free! I have not had any trouble changing the resolution in any other Distro. The instructions seem pretty straight forward but the screen goes crazy. It is currently at 1024X768 I use 1600x something in the Windows boot side but can't even get 1280X1024. Screen splits and looks all crazy.
It is an IBM A30P Thinkpad. with a 15 inch screen. Tried to find a matching monitor type but nothing looks close in the selection screen. Any ideas?
