Unhappy simple uninstalling

I'm trying out linux for the first time coming from an all windows background. Learning about computers for the first time again has proven to be quite a chore and the simplest things are turning out to be the most difficult. Here is my problem:

I installed Redhat 9.0. Soon I discovered that xmms does not come with mp3 support so I downloaded and installed the mpg123 plugin that allows mp3s to be played. I got that to work but was unsatisfied that I couldnt stream mp3s off of samba shares from my windows network. I then downloaded the source code of xmms, patched it with the mpg-123 smb plugin, ran ./configure and then make install. Unfortunatelly, the new version that this installed did not have the MP3 support (although it did have the samba support). When I went to try to reinstall the rpm for xmms mp3 support it says that it is already installed. No matter what I do I can't seem to reinstall this package. I tried logging in as root and running rpm -e <mpg-123-smb> or whatever the filename is. I also tried make uninstall and reinstall. Could someone tell me the proper way to uninstall this package so I can reinstall it? My appologies for my ignorance and frustration.

rpm -e <packagename (without the dot rpm)> I think is the command to uninstall.

Have you tried the packate managing tool for handling RPMs??

redhat-config-packages
