Simple (?) SuSE 9.1 Pro installation problem
 

Hi :)

I'm new here, so be nice please ;)

I'm trying to install SuSE 9.1 Pro, simple default installation, beside my 2-partition XP.
The problem is that when its done installing from CD1 it reboots and loads from CD ans quickly (15 seconds) asks me what CD-meny choise I want. Default is "Boot from harddrive", but I can also change to for example "Install Linux".
Anyway I let it boot from harddrive, but then the screen turns black and I see the text GRUB in the top left corner, and nothing happens.
If I reboot and try "Install Linux" it says I have some kind of Linux installation and wonder if I want to repair it or install it from scratch.

What could be the problem here you guys?
I did this simple default installation a few weeks ago, but my hd crashed and now I'm on a new hd, also with XP SP2 on c: and d:, but now I get this "error" :(

Well you can setup manually the GRUB----> (HOWTO ?)
Try this trick that solves most of the Suse 9.1 pro Installation problems,
Install the Personal edition and when it installs the right way just update; but if this update fails, manually install the kernels in the suse pro and re boot, then it will update.

Oh, thanks, but I guess everything that has the word "manual" in it is not for me since I'm a real newbie and I just want a simple default installation to start with, and then start to learn little by little. Not start with the hard stuff right away, and specially not in such a delicate area as the installation that MIGHT fsck up my whole harddrive and windows-partitions if I make the wrong choise some place.

I just wonder how how how can this happen now when it worked a few weeks ago on my old hd, also with XP SP2 and also with c: and d: NTFS present, and also with around 5GB free unpartitioned space :S

Anyway, is there a simple workaround for this, like choosing some other bootmanager, I think theres one called LILO but I dont know if that or any others are included with SuSE.

Strange stuff this problem....really.

Edit: I dont even know what it meanse, just black screen and the word GRUB in top left corner. Does it mean GRUB is started and somethings wrong with it, or does it mean something is looking for GRUB and cant find it, or maybe it has started but cant find any of the two OS installed or what? I dont have a clue what it means since no error is written out :(

Edit2: Oh, I might add if it could help, when I removed the Linux CD and tried to boot windows it started with the bios-messages as usual and then to the bottom left it added up GRUB GRUB GRUB.
Exactly like that, three times, and then nothing happened.
I had to delete the Linux-partitions to get XP to start.
Is that a hint to what is wrong here or noone has a clue?

I just tried with LILO instead of GRUB and the same thing happened, but instead of just writing GRUB at boot and then nothing, it did write L and then added 99 99 99 99 slowly filling the screen with 99's :D

I noticed in the setup for the startup-options during installation that there was some kind of option that I dont remember the exact name for, that I think was for putting the boot-manager on its own partition. Create boot-manager partition or something was the option, and it was NOT checked.
Might that be a good idea for me since my boot managers wont work for some reason (even though they worked on my old hd that was partitioned the same way)?

I dont want to try anything that has a chance of screwing up my windows. So far its been just to delete the linux-partitions and windows is up and running again, but if creating this boot-manager partition can be dangerous I will not try it.
