Which distribution are you using? Are you using vmware or something along those lines?

Just don't do this. It's .... well ... stupid. And leads to pointless confusion (as you have discovered - "Cannot ececute binary file" Etc.)

Just do it with linux, a variety of editors has been suggested, try them until you find one that works for you. Google linux text editor to see the full list.

Then google linux <chosen editor> HOWTO to find out how it works (if you are having trouble, the GUI ones are intuitive).

Even better, use google's special search engine for linux-related questions at

If you're using gnome just use gedit (thanks people, for reminding me).
You'll find it under "Utilities" or something similar. Just search for it in your menus, then use it.
