Simple question

i386? x86? i586? SPARC?

Ze combination of ze numbers and ze letters! Zey confuse me!

Want/need to know what architecture IS... why it's important for linux('s programs), the naming systems, etc...

Oh ya, and if anyone has a good SuSE 8.2 install tutorial they could point me to, it'd be very helpful (but don't bother writing your own... I plan on looking for one later, but it'd be helpful to be given a link... no time spent googling)
