Simple newbie question

I just started this whole Linux thing as i'm sure you've heard new comers say time and time again. I'm trying to install the Links text browser, so I've downloaded it, I've untared it and put it into a directory. Now i just have to somehow install it. I actually don't know what to do, there's an INSTALL file that i'm not sure how to use or even select, an install-sh which is apparantly a shell script. I've tried several things;

install /<directory path>

but that created an empty folder at the correct path. I tried doing something I saw somewhere else: ./configure or something. I just got Linux a few days ago and have been working through the headache of getting anything done. In short, I've untarred it, so i've got a list of files needed to install the browser, the question is, now what?
Thanks for reading.

The INSTALL file is a file with instructions on how to install the program. Open it in a text editor and it will tell you what you need to do.
