Sigmatel-C Audio and Linux

I have yet to find a single distro that will work the Audio controller on my Dell Inspiron 5150 other that Redhat Enterprise 3 at $1499.00????

Does anyone know of one that will work the audio?

Btw..the Live CD's don't even work my audio...

I have tried:

RH 9 fedora
Suse Pro 9
Xandros 2.01
Mandrake 10
college linux
gentoo
feather
slackware 10

Live Cd's

Suse 9.1 live
PCLinuxOS 2k4-7

I would like to make this notebook a dual-boot, I miss my linux, & can only use it on my desktop, which I obviously cannot take with....Please help!

Regards,

Jay A

sigmatel-c continued

I also tried all of these distros

Yoper
Conectiva 10
Aurox 9.4
Linspire 4.5
PLD

any help getting a linux distro to work the audio on my Inspiron 5150 is much appreciated.

BTW.. I thought that all ac97 audio were lumped into one category of drivers. Am I wrong?

Thanks Again,

Jay A

I don't know if you've already solved your problem (your last post is rather old); but warmly recommed you try knoppix; or even better; kanotix. Both are LiveCDs with great autodetection. Kanotix is better fit for hd-installation.

Hi Night Frost,

Thanks for the reply!!!

I had given up, back then after someone that I know... suggested Knoppix 3.4 No luck...

When I received the email with your reply, I went back, & saw that Knoppix 3.6 was out.. I downloaded it, and kanotix, as you suggested...

They both work!!!

I need XP pro for connecting to the College network..unfortunately

& I cannot get Knoppix to let me write to the NTFS filesystem

I was told to use a capture NTFS command, but don't know how, to go about that

Would I do that in konqerer?

Do you know the command?

OR

Would it be easier to resize my HDD & put Kanotix on a Linux partition?

If the latter would be better, would you tell me, the easiest way, to install a LiveCD to HDD...I never did that before...

Thanks so much, I'm happy to just have a Linux OS working on it!!!

One other thing. I couldn't get my PCMCIA card to conncet to my Wifi router, in either Knop, or Kano...

Am I missing something?

Kind Regards,

Jay A

Hey, I'm glad things worked out for you :D

I must first say that I'm much of a newbie myself, but I'm gonna try to shed some light on your questions.

As far as I know, Linux has no problem connecting to a micro$oft network. You might need to install something called samba.

I've never really used captive, but I think the first thing to do is to install the drivers (which captive takes from your existing winXP installation. And then you have to go to the shell (and the sooner you start using the shell the better ;)); the command for mounting an ntfs-partition with captive is mount.captive. Write

Code:

man mount.captive
in the shell to get to the manual pages. I've also heard that captive is a bit risky for ntfs drives; then again I've heard it works no prob. Search for captive here at LQ.

OK; here's where Kanotix is definitely better than Knoppix. Open a shell and write.

Code:

kanotix-installer
or if you're connected to the net

Code:

kanotix-installer-latest-web
And yes, you need a linux partition to install any linux OS. You should need one / partition and one swap-partition in the least. I suggest you do some resizing with partition magic in Windoze. I messed up my system once when trying to resize with linux's clone qtparted. So I'd suggest you use windows PM for resizing. Make sure you have windows in the first partition.

Anyway, having said all this, you should check out the knoppix forum and kanotix forum and definitely search here at LQ.

Good luck!

PS. your PCMCIA-card should work as well. I don't have any experience with wifi, but check this out at the kanotix-forum

Hi Night Frost,

Thanks again.

I got kanotix, to install, right off the net, so everything is working great..I had a copy of PM 8 for M$, as win 95 was my first OS, & I just got into Linux OS's this year...so I obviously needed it!!!

For someone fairly new to linux, you were the only one to help...

I would have thought that one of the people using linux since it's inception as an OS, would have know, which distros would be best, but you hooked me up!

Now it is time to get back to hitting the books, but at least I can now stop spending so much cash on M$ stuff, & get alot more outta this notebook..Yep browsing from Kanotix, as I write!

Regards,

Jay A

I'm glad I could help ;-)

It's nice to be able to help out someone for a change -- until now I've been just asking a lot of questions (still doing though).

Good luck!
