shutting off the firewall

How do I shut off the firewall in RH version 8? I dont want to configure it through the gui, I want it shut off compltely. Shutting it off throught the gui is not working, so I think I need to go into a config file to do so.

I think that chkconfig --level 35 iptables off at the prompt should do it. Then service iptables -F

OK, for some reason it did not like the chkconfig command in any form, even though I was able to bring up the man pages for it. I was able to shut off the (iptables) service through the GUI, however. Now I can SSH into the machine like I wanted.

Thanks a lot!
