shutdown X server

Hi I have FC6 installed and am trying to intall the NVIDIA drivers. Well it asks me to shutdown the X server when I run the install.

Problem is I have no idea How to do this.

I did install both the KDE and Gnome if that makes a difference. I've used KDE before and wanted to see Gnome before going with one of the other. By default I boot into KDE.

Thanks for the help

Do you use a graphical login manager? I'm assuming that you do... As root, type telinit 3 in a terminal window. This will change your run level from 5 (I think that's the level Fedora uses for GUI, have a look in /etc/inittab) to run level 3. In run level 3, your X server isn't running and you can install the nvidia drivers.

After you've installed the drivers, type telinit 5 to change back to GUI mode.

I thought for Fedora you'd use
init 3
instead of telinit, but as I'm not running FC right now, I can't say for sure.

It was init 3

After init 3 I had to press control alt F1 to get a login prompt. Not sure why I knew that, but figured if anyone refers to this post it may come in handy.
