shutdown problems

I have a multiboot system using lilo.
win98 on hda
rh 7.2 / (primary parition) hdb2(ext3)
debian woody /distro (logical partition) hdb6(ext2)
mandrake 8.1 /distroii (logical partition) hdb7(ext2)
I am able to boot up into rh just fine and to navigate into the file systems of the other distributions. I shutdown improperly. The various partitions do not unmount cleanly. Any help is appreciated.

if i understand you correctly, everytime you shutdown improperly, yes, the mounts will not unmount cleanly.

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my original post.
When I shutdown after a session in rh 7.2 I get run level 0 shutting down then this:

init: there are no other processes to shut down on this level

Then I am left with a blinking prompt that responds to nothing (it hangs) If I do ctrl+alt+del I get

init:run level 6

and it hangs again.
Then I'm left with a hard kill  When I go to reboot I am given a forced check. I have tried ctrl+alt+f2 I am left with a login prompt but no ability to log in (keyboard out?)

thanks for your consideration
