LinuxQuestions.org - Shutdown problem

I am sorry to cross-post, but the answers I got on the laptop forum were over my head. Here's the situation:

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite S126 on which I have successfully installed Red Hat Linux 3 ES in a dual boot (boot manager = GRUB) with Windows XP - Home. When I try to shut down the computer from Linux it doesn't shut down completely. When I manually shut it down (the 15-second power-button hold), the computer will not reboot -it doesn't start the bios to read the hard drive, cd-rom, etc. Just nothing. RH tech support said removing and then reinserting the battery would restore booting, which it does.

They also told me they thought the problem was in the power management for the cpu cooling fan, which isn't handled by the system, so the 'power off' part hangs right there. They said there is a non-RHN patch which handles that problem, but RH couldn't guarantee or support that. It doesn't matter, I have no idea where to get it anyway.

Answering my post, someone said get kernel 2.6.x, should solve the problem. But I don't know how.

Here's what I need:

1. I need an explanation of how to find the patch RH mentioned. This might be easy, they gave me a ticket number, said the web site url where I could get it would be on the write up, but I've been all over their web sites and haven't found any place where I can input a ticket number, or where my technical problem is noted. So maybe if someone can tell me how to get there, I can get the patch and go forward with it.

2. Then, how do I get the kernel mentioned (2.6.x)? The latest official RH kernel is 2.4.20 - that's what shows up when I do up2date, and I've installed it already. That didn't solve the problem, btw.
