"shutdown now "problem for RHEL 4 server


Dear Friends ,

I m using RHEL 4 server . During shutting down the server when I execute comand "shutdown now" , then the server does not shutdown properly . It shows "bash3.1" prompt onto the Display . Can anybody plz tell me ,

Is this ("shutdown now") command not suitable for this serve to shutdown the server ?

Well i've never tried

shutdown now
what about trying
Code:
shutdown -h now
for halt after shutting down or
Code:
shutdown -r now
for a reboot?

In all of my distributions I issue either of these two as root:

man shutdown

Looks to me like you're going into runlevel 1 (single user).
