Shutdown not working in Ubuntu Desktop 11.04

Howdy Guys and Girls,

I will admitt that I'm very new to Linux, but I do have some knowledge in IT (mainly systems running Windows).

I have an Acer Aspire Revo R3700, running 2GB Ram, 1.8GHz Intel Dual-Core Micro-processor, and nVidia Ion 2nd generation for graphics. Its got a 320GB hdd, wifi (up-to and including N) and a giga-byte ethernet port. And one BD-R usb disc drive.

I'm running Ubuntu desktop 11.04, it loads up fine, with no issues that I know of. I can use the system with no issues either, but as soon as I ask it to shutdown or restart it plays up. It will start to shutdown then hang on the desktop background, allowing no user input, yet the usb ports are still active and powered (the mouse and keyboard lights are both still on).

I have tried the sudo halt command as well as the sudo shutdown -r now command. I have tried re-installing the OS.

The system used to have Linpus Linux X Window 9.5 running on it when I first bought it, but it was quite limited when installed stuff etc. and refused to even think of wine... So I wiped it and installed Ubuntu via my usb external BD-R player. I had no issues turning it off with Linpus.

I had heard that its possible to remove the shutdown button, but I'm unsure how to...

Is this a problem with Ubuntu or is it just my system in general? As I don't really want to keep holding the power button as that can harm the system(?).

May I thank you all for any help in advance!

Kind Regards

Tom

Are you sure that the system isn't shutting down and not powering off? If so that would be an ACPI issue.

What happens if you stop X, and issue "shutdown -h now" from shell?

Also some people have been having problems with some nvidea devices hanging on shutdown.
Do a search on LQ and see what others have done. I think they changed to different video drivers.

You really don't want to hold the power button down to shutdown. The shutdown command puts everything away nicely

I know I don't want to be turning it off by the button, I've even tried leaving it on for a few hours to see if it shuts down... It doesn't.

I believe that the os is still running and either stuck shutting down a process or having issues with the psu and hardware shutdown.

I tried the sudo shutdown -h now command with the gui running to no effect. I am going to try swithing to the command line interface (forgive me if that's windows speak) as soon as I work out how. As I know that the root login is disabled in ubuntu, I think I've got to run a terminal as root and edit or turn off or delete(?) the x files.

As for now ill try looking through the forum for similar problems and what their fixes were. And if that fails ill look at reinstalling the driver for Ion2 to see if that has an effect.

Kind Regards

Tom
