Shutdown Menu Item Keeps Disappearing.
 

I am having problems with my CentOS 5 installation. From time to time
the shutdown menu item keeps disappearing.

Anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening?

Is all else equal??? I mean, are you always logging in as the same user and into the same desktop environment??
If not, certain users may be configure to not show the command on the menu or may not have the security privilege(s) to execute the command.

Anyway, you can always shutdown from a terminal session.

I always log in as the same user... root for now as I am setting up the machine.

Sometimes I get the Gnome login screen and sometimes I get the bash login?

When I get the Gnome login screen the shutdown menu item is in the list
but when I get a bash login and go the the Desktop from 'startx' it isn't
in the list...

My mouse always seems to freeze up the machine from time to time as well.
My xorg.log file shows no errors at all.

This is a fresh install of CentOS 5 and I haven't done anything other
than upgrading the kernel.

Why is this happening? - that's the question to answer. The missing login prompt is just a symptom to this problem.

What is different? Why does X start automatically sometimes, but not always?

What boot manager does Cent use? Grub? Lilo?
Are you always selecting the same boot menu item? Are you passing parameters to the kernel on boot? Yada, Yada, Yada...

It uses GNome and I pass no special params to it.

The only thing I have done is upgrade the Kernel
through Yum.
