UBUNTU 10.4

I have successfully migrated to ubunto Linux and have come up with a problem I cannot seem to resolve. I played around with the login window and since (although i do not know if it is related) I am unable to shutdown from the top right drop down. Ubuntu just reboots. I can, however shutdown from the system drop down list. Can anybody help as I just like things to work as they should

But I digress. If you haven't put in too much time I would suggest simply reinstalling the operating system. It can be very useful for new Linux users and it is often preferable to finding some obscure malfunction that isn't worth learning to fix. You would be better off spending your time learning what applications are available for whatever you intend to do with your computer.

Well it was working as it should until you..... Anyhow, right click the button and select Setup Login Screen then click the Edit Commands button. Where it says Command Type: click the drop down box and select Halt command. In the Path box it should say: /sbin/shutdown -h now "Shut Down via gdm." and that's it.

Thanks but the edit halt command line already has the exact line that you have mentioned. Any other ideas?

I've read a lot of questions regarding problems with Ubuntu 8.10. My impression is that they should have spent more time looking for problems before they released it.

I know that there is a lot of good new stuff in the v8.10 release but you may be happier with v8.04. I know it will be a while before I think about using a higher version of (K)Ubuntu. Version 8.04 is solid.

You could always try resetting your desktop by deleting the following in your home/username folder: .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

Performing this action will remove any customisations you have done thus far. Backup any valuable data first, there are no guarantees things won't go wrong. You then need to log out and back in again.

I had a problem - not the same - but it could have something to do with ACPI. I ran debian on a pc and the system would not actually shutdown - just halt. This was because of a ACPI problem, connected with my hardware.

Maybe, you could just double check to see that ACPI is working as it should - if not, a change to another distro may solve the problem.

For me, debian did not work on my desktop - but Mandriva, Suse , FreeBSD, and others did...just a thought.

Thanks for all your efforts guys but so far nothing has worked. I would just like to reiterate if it helps that the problem only exists with the 'Green Man' menu on the top right of the screen. When shutting down from the 'System' menu it shuts down fine
