shut down problems

Hello admitedly new to Linux still, about a month in on Mandrake 10.0. The problem is every time I select logout I get a new "enviornment??" which just so happens to be a nice big blue screen with only a Konsole that is embedded into it. I have no I dea how to navigate to a new logout or new "enviornment??" within this.
This all started when I was confused with the logout procedure. I always get another "enviornment??" or a box asking me "HAlt Really".
Could someone please set me strait as to how to fix the first problem and show me how to correctly logout as per the second problem.
Thank you in advance.

you're sure you're not being taken out into "text-mode", right?? if you are being taken into text-mode upon logout, ignore the rest of my post... if you think X (the graphical interface) is still running when you go into that "logout state" (like, if you see a "window" anywhere), then read on:

sounds like your desktop manager is broken or missing...

upon logout you should be taken to a desktop manager, where you can log back in and select what desktop environment or window manager to use...

you should have either xdm, kdm, or gdm installed... it's weird though, cuz i'm sure you get one by default...

also, look in your control center in the desktop manager section... maybe it's called differently, but i'm sure there is an option in there to configure your desktop manager...
