showing both the icon & filename on the panel in MATE

Using debian with MATE 1.6.0 desktop, which resembles the gnome 2 layout.

I need to access several text files frequently so I want them placed on a panel.
However, the icon is the same for all files, so it's hard to discern between them - I need to hover with the mouse over each one to see its filename.

Is there a way to display both an icon & the filename on the panel?

tnx

In answer to your question No not that I know of.

Now let me ask you a question. Why are you using MATE 1.6 when Debian supports MATE 1.8 officially?
Please read this page and install MATE 1.8 so you are using a supported version.
