Should I replace this USB cable?

It connects a Sandisk pen drive to my laptop. As you can see both the cable and the connecting part now have some green on them. There is nothing green on any part of the USB drive.

This cable works great so far but I'd hate to have it screw up the pen drive or the laptop. (Now that I'm looking, there is a tiny bit of green where the cable connects to the laptop too.)

Thanks!

Copper corrosion. I vote replace, especially since such cables are cheap.

fix it dude
Code:

Put some vinegar in a small vial and mix in salt until it will no
longer dissolve. Take another vial and put some water and
bicarbonate of soda or baking powder, same thing, in it. Add more
bicarb until it remains cloudy. Swizz the wire round in the salt
and vinegar mix until bright, clean and shiny.

works on battery cables too for you car ;) hehe

just baking soda and water -- that one is a bit different

I agree, typically tin is electroplated on top of copper for corrosion control. If it has migrated up the cable then the connector contacts could be questionable.

If corrosion was just in one spot then fixing it would be ok but as it is on the cable shield then you can not tell how bad it is internally. Cables are cheap.

Hi Hydrurga. Thanks. Yep, will order a new cable as soon as I get out of here. Appreciate it!

Thanks BW. Sounds good but I think I'm getting a new cable instead! :)

Thanks Michael. I guess I never thought of it as corrosion since it was green. I'm getting a new cable!
