shortcut does not work...
 

Ok, more newbie questions:

1. I've installed a program from a RPM, installed fine. The shortcut it creates on the program menu does not work. If I create a my own shortcut to program with correct path to executable, it does not work. If i browse to the director containing the executable and launch it, it works fine. Any idea how to get the shortcut to work. I'm using Mandrake 8.1 and gnome desktop.

2. Everytime I reboot and login, 2 instances of a firewall program open. Where is the information kept? How can I stop them from opening up?

find the program file (executionable) and check that it actually IS executionable... if it is then (though this almost never happens) you may have a crappy install, in that case you may need to un- and re- install
