Sharing internet through data cable from a mobile that is already sharing via wifi
Hello everybody,
I am seeking help regarding sharing internet connection. I would be greatful. I have;
What I have been doing now is; I have an internet connection to my Laptop with an external modem and Ethernet. Its working fine. I have an unlimited plan and so I want to share this internet connection on the mobile phone too; instead of incuring extra cost by connecting to the internet directly through the phone. I am successful at that. I can share this internet connection on my phone through WiFi. Now, what I want to do is; without buying any extra hardware, to share this same internet connection on my Desktop PC, too. What I tried is; I searched the web, but didn't find any solution. Now I am here. Please kindly help me. Thank you & Regards Anil |
You could create a crossover cable using the wiring Ethernet standard EIA/TIA 568A on one end and EIA/TIA 568B on the other. Then connect to the Nokia over wifi with the laptop and mobile phone. Use your newly created Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet ports of the laptop and desktop (their IPs will be static unless you set up DHCP). Configure iptables to use NAT on the laptop because the desktop is connecting through it.
If you take apart one end of an existing Ethernet cable and it doesn't follow the EIA/TIA 568 standard then simply reverse the colored wires at the other end. That will also create a crossover cable. Please note, it is really difficult to take apart and re-assemble Ethernet cables without an RJ-45 crimper and purchasing an RJ-45 connector. Summary, Code:
nokia <-> wifi <-> mobile SAM |

I thought over your suggestions. However, the sugestion is about connecting the Laptop & the Desktop physically through a cable. On the other hand I was thinking of something like below, where there is no physical connection between the Laptop & the Desktop. Code:
Internet sharing path = laptop <-> wifi <-> mobile <-> USB cable <-> desktop Regards Anil |
Maybe. If your laptop's wireless chipset is compatible with hostapd then you could create an access point. The adapter has to be capable of being configured as a master which may not be possible.
All other solutions may involve purchasing some hardware. |

E.g. Code:
nokia <-> USB <-> desktop NAT <-> wifi access point <-> laptop/mobile |
I believe that sag47 is correct you can not use the phone's wifi to share an internet connection. However, since the OP does not want to use the Phone to share due to limits this means that what the OP wants to accomplish is not possible with out extra hardware.

How to know if my laptop's wireless chipset is compatible with hostapd? Quote:
But before purchasing, I wanted do discuss on something that is lingering in my mind, just to sharpen my ignorance a bit in this matter. Consider the situation; the mobile is 'ON' [I mean it is sharing/connected to the internet through wifi from the Laptop]; the mobile is physically connected to the Desktop through the USB cable; the Desktop wants to use the internet that is 'live' inside the mobile, through the USB cable. Afterall the Desktop just wants to dip its beak into the water [internet] already flowing inside the Phone :). Accessibility is also possible. The only thing that remains is, giving the Desktop the address of the point where the flow is available ;). Now here I humbly feel, the only thing that is required is one of the following;
Isn't there a software/programme, to install in the Desktop or Phone, that can link the physical addresses of the Desktop & the Phone and make the Desktop use the 'live internet' inside the phone? OR;
So can we not, tweak the browser [here in my case Firefox] to connect to the 'live internet' inside the phone, by feeding the physical address of the mobile in the browser?
Isn't there any software [other than Nokia Ovi & PC suite. they are not working in my case] by which I can enter the OS of the phone and use a browser installed inside the phone, to access the 'live internet' inside the phone. These are some of the thoughts that are lingering in my mind. Could you please kindly through light upon my 'un-informed' thoughts. Thanks a lot michaelk, for coming. Regards Anil |

Is it possible to add some software in the Phone or Desktop, to enable USB tethering, if that helps? Thank you Regards Anil |
