Sharing Excel files in Linux

I am using Calder Open Linux as file server. We can share Microsoft Word files, change them, print them save them etc., but when I try to alter a Microsoft Excel file it tell me "Save not complete. File rename failed" then it saves it in a temp file. I CAN use Save as and rename the file, but that isn't what I want to do. Any ideas why it works for Word and not Excel? I don't want to switch software since the idea of teaching all the staff to use something else gives me a headache.

Thanks for your help

Sharing Excel files

Some additional info for this problem. Someone told me that unlike Word, Excel will only allow one copy of the file to be open at a time so trying to share it won't work. Any one else have this problem?

Hi there.
Just a thought..... have you checked the permissions on the XL file???
Depending on who created the file on the share, sometimes the permissions are set for write only to the owner... and if I remember right, will not allow changes to it by any one else unless they save to another file name (another file) first.
I don't think two people can have full access to an XL file at once, I remember that if a second person tries to open the same file, then the option is given to open in "read only" or "notify" when the file becomes available. Does this sound right?

Hope this helps

I believe I have it so everyone in that group can change anything anyone else puts in that share. It works well with Word files, but Excel keeps giving me trouble. I have gotten the message that I can have a "read only" copy, but only with the Word files. It seems to me the problem only occurs with the Excel files. I can use "save as" and change the name of the file, but not save it as the same name. Maybe that is what we will have to do, but it seems there should be another way.

Thanks for the help.
