sharing email between xp + linux (imap?)
 

i have several pop3 accounts around the web, which i normally check with outlook (running 2003 now). i set up a dual boot with slack 9.1 and would like to have whatever email client i use share a data file for my inbox with outlook. i have a fat32 partition that i could put outlook's data on, if there's a mail client out there for linux that will use it. otherwise, i see a couple options:

-set outlook to check but not remove messages from server, then remove them with linux mail client (but i would have to check my mail from both linux + windows regularly)

-find a client with win32 and linux versions to share the same data file on the fat32 drive (thunderbird i guess...)

-people keep telling me something about an IMAP server, but i don't know anything about it. i guess i would need to set up another machine that would regularly check all my pop3 accounts and then have linux and windows both check mail from the local imap server (no need to delete messages if it's all local)?

Good how-to for doing the third one. You would need another box, but it could be fairly old, and still do this very well.

This is how I do it, and I have yet to find a different and/or better solution. I guess it is possible to use the same mail client on both systems and have them reference the same data file, but in order for this to work the file would have to have the same format under both OS'es. I am assuming that Thunderbird might work in this fashion, but then again, it might not.

POP3 is download now and read later. Its great for dialup but for those people that uses multiple computers it can be a nighmare. IMAP is great for people that uses multiple computers. IMAP downloads a copy of your e-mails instead of just dowloading all of your e-mails at once.

Firebird should have a mail setting so that it does not download the mail. It just downloads a copy.

You can always make your own e-mail server that uses IMAP instead of POP3. You will have complete control on how many e-mail accounts you have and how much space each e-mail account can take.

You can try to use the web e-mail if your e-mal provider has one.

i duel boot and i use two different mail clients on both oses.. there's an option in thunderbird.. something like "..leave messeges on server". there's an option like that in evolution as well. check that, and once month (or week), use the web client to remove the old emails from the server that has already been downloaded to both/all ur systems. <- that's what i do.
