Severe Lag

Here's the story:

Got in a new computer today. Had WinXP preinstalled, so I removed it and installed SuSE 8 Pro. After installation, I logged on as my normal name, and was just clicking around to see what all the first two disks had installed. Then, I wanted to change the MoTD, so I logged on as root for the first time. (throughout all of this I was using KDE 3.0). It was fine for maybe the first 30 seconds, but then it started to lag. And by that, I don't mean just click and wait 2 or 3 seconds, I mean waiting minutes for something to happen after I clicked it. To be more precise, the bar at the bottom of the screen lagged, as the other parts worked fine.

So I logged off as root and on as my normal user, and it didnt lag at all, for about 30 minutes, and then it started doing it.

Any ideas?

The system is an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ with a gig of RAM

Ask me any questions that you need to know, I'll gladly answer I just don't know what all info i need to say.

Thanks!

What is top reporting?

What do you mean by "top reporting"?

TomG 08-07-2002 05:38 PM

Ok, well I guess I'll go into more detail.

Basically, the only thing that really lags is the leftmost portion of the taskbar at the bottom. Sometimes it wont even respond. Otherewise, the computer functions normally.

So it's like a desabled person, hmm, by "what's top reporting" I meant run top command in the console and see which process gets more CPU time and load, maybe there is a misconfiguration of some service, or there is a heavy duty service running on your system, which is not needed.

Well, it has only lagged once since that happened, so I haven't been able to see what it says when it happens, but right now, it says it's using .1% of the system's resources.

Could it be a conflict with some KDE files? Should I add them again?
