setting up new nic card on old version of Fedora

Hello,

I'm very new to Linux. We have a server on our network (using Solaris 8) that may have had a faulty nic card. So I've installed a new network card on it. Now I would like to use that card instead of the old one which is attached to the motherboard. The only o/s on this machine is an older version of Fedora.

Thank you.

I'm confused -- is the machine running Solaris or the old version of Fedora? In either case, ifconfig -a should show both the old, failing card and the new card. In Fedora you can create new interface files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts -- look at the scripts for the existing NIC card to give you an idea what you need to do.

Thank you for your response. It was very helpful. This machine has Fedora running on it, but it accesses disks on a network running Solaris 8.

ifconfig -a showed both network cards as you stated.

Then I renamed the script ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-eth1 and changed "DEVICE" and "HWADDR" to the new device (eth1) and hardware address (given by ifconfig -a).
