Setting up Linux

Hi, I am a college student majoring in Security. We are in Penetrating Testing this semester and I have set up a portable VBox and installed Backtrack on it. When I start the program it goes to root@bt: #. I need to set up a home directory with my name and set the internet up. How do I do this? I tried adduser marily but got a error code 6. What am I doing wrong?

Mark, this did not help but thank you for answering. When I tried following what was done I kept getting the message: no such file or directory.

I just googled for you and have no real experience in what you are asking. So bear with me, I will just ask you some questions that came up in my mind:

Have you made sure what the file/directory is missing?
Does that maybe imply something?
Do you understand what went wrong? Or what might not have been completed yet?

I hope someone with some more knowledge about your subject comes around.

By the way, are you using Ubuntu in the VBox? Since you use adduser I kind of figured that. There is a lot of documentation around, but you might want to try their forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/. They have a real nice community like we have here.

Mark,
I am using backtrack. That is the software the instructor wants. I talked to several other people in the class and they are all having the same problem. I have decided to download the Virtual Box to my laptop and then the software and see if that makes a difference. Will let you know.

Take a look at

Did you looked at the howto's?

Kind regards

It may be related to the /etc/skel directory.
The /etc/skel directory contains files and directories that are automatically copied over to a new user's home directory when such user is created by the useradd/adduser program.

Can you post the output of ls -la /etc/skel ?

Also check for files containing blank spaces or special characters in /etc/skel and subdirectories.

Thanks everyone. I finally decided to not use the Portable on flash, and installed the VBox and Backtrack on my laptop and so far it works great. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but, most of the class had the same problem. This is new to me, but I have set up my home page and the internet, and even used Wireshark for a project in class.
Thanks Again.

Perhaps you can discuss this problem with your teacher.

Kind regards
