Setting up FTP access for my box

Hi

I'm a beginner and renting out my own vps so as to learn about running a Linux based web server.

I've successfully added users and also installed proFTPd....I'm running Fedora Core 4 and did yum install proftpd.

However I've not been able to access the box using an ftp client (cuteftp) as one of the users....(I've definetly entered the correct username and password)

Is there anything else that I have to do in the process?

any help greatly appreciated

Unfortunately there's one other thing you need to resolve first and that's installing F8 from scratch (or go through the upgrade path if you don't mind b0rking things beyond repair). FC4 is unmaintained and unsupported which means you miss all the (security) updates you need. If you don't like the speed with which Fedora moves better look for a different distribution.

Wrt FTP'ing in, that's network stuff so the first thing would be to see if the firewalls involved let the necessary ports through and if they do look at the logs to see if there is anything relevant wrt say auth.
