this is a real newb question but not sure where to turn. i recently purchased a developer vps from mediatemple. i have ubuntu 13* apache2 mysql and php installed and working fine with virtual domains.

however i want the site to be able to send out emails for registration and such, do i need an email server?

if so can you recommend one, and maybe a link or note as to point me in the right direction to set it up?

You will want to configure an MTA such as exim or sendmail running on the VPS which your apps can submit mail to, and which will take care of relaying it. Its main functions are managing a mail queue, blocking spam and putting the right sender name on the mail (masquerade). Mediatemple may want you to send mail through their smart host rather than direct from the server. Check their support site. You shouldn't need a separate server until you get to high volumes. Make sure you set up monitored postmaster address(es) to look for problems.
