Setting up dual monitors

Hey, I just joined but I have browsed here before. I am trying to set up my video drivers for my ubuntu 6.10 system. I currently have 2 Nvidia 6600GT's, and with those two I would like to run two monitors, one video card per monitor ( Not SLI ). I have tried to follow some tutorials but I always end up killing my xorg.conf file, which gets to be quite time consuming when trying to do this between school.
In case this info is needed.
Code:
figgy@Delta:~$ lspci -x | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT] (rev a2)
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT] (rev a2)
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder26) Mon Oct 16 22:13:48 PDT 2006

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Try the file below after copying your current file to a backup this should give you two separate desktops one for each video card/monitor combination. Depending how the monitors are situated on the desktop you may want to change the LeftOf to RightOf and you might want to fill in the VendorName and ModelName correctly for the second monitor. If it does not work can you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file so we can see how everything gets detected, you will need to put this in two post as it is rather big and make sure to copy it to a backup before starting X with your working file otherwise it will be overwritten.

When I did that I got a parse error on line 20 that says "Dual Head" is not a valid section name.

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

EDIT: I just changed it to serverlayout and it works.. sorta. Now that I have done that, I now can use both monitors. The only thing is both of them are the same only with one mouse. I have 2 separate start menu's and I can't drag a window from one window to the next.

Sorry edited the wrong line there that should be "ServerLayout" and the line below "Dual Head" instead of "Default Layout".

Are you saying that the default layout part should read dualhead? Also, I need to flip the monitors because the left is on the right and vice versa.

The section should read and I have changed the monitors around.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Dual Head"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
    InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
    InputDevice "Configured Mouse"
EndSection

I had already gotten it, but thanks again.

EDIT:
Arg... for some reason every time I start this machine up the main screen has a low res screen, while the other is 1280. If I restart X it fixes it, any suggestions.

That seems strange can you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file copy it to a backup before restarting X to get the proper resolution otherwise it gets overwritten, you will need to put it into two separate posts as it is rather big.

As you requested here is the Xorg.0.log file. I had to edit it some to make it fit on the forum. And as a side question, I updated my computer yesterday, and it caused my terminal to break, leaving me to use xterm.

Alright try the file below it does not seem to want to find the information it needs from the monitor itself so you will need to put your refresh rate ranges in for each monitor like this example from my file.

Code:
# NEC P1250 +
Section "Monitor"
       DisplaySize 384 288 # mm
       Identifier "Monitor0"
       VendorName "NEC"
       ModelName "P1250 +"
       HorizSync 31-110 # DDC-probed
       VertRefresh 55-160 # DDC-probed
       Option "DPMS" "true"
       Option "BackingStore" "On"
EndSection
You need to add the HorizSync and VertRefresh numbers for your monitors to the right sections if you don't have the manuals for the monitors putting the make/model number into a Google search will usually find the specifications needed. BTW if needing to post the log file again post the whole thing in two separate posts so we can see how everything gets detected and I see from a previous edit I missed that you probably don't want the two different screens but most likely want one large desktop. Is this correct?

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder26) Mon Oct 16 22:13:48 PDT 2006
