setting up DNS
Hello Linux community,
I'm struggling with a problem (ProblemS I should say), I'd really appreciate some help. So here is the story. I need to set up DNS on a linux box which we have purchased. This server is supposed to serve as a mail exchanger. I've installed postfix, set up Apache, and installed mailman. They all work. Except that I left out one "small" detail, I don't have DNS set up on the box. So I had a go at setting up the nameserver, and I got as far as getting a local caching nameserver to work. but thats about it. I was instructed by our ISP (once I realized I wasn't recieving emails to the box) to do the following: I quote: --------------- In order to get DNS functioning for a domain hosted on a dedicated or virtual dedicated server that domain must be pointed to the dedicated hosting server for DNS resolution. Ensure that a zone file for the domain is setup on the dedicated or virtual dedicated server. We cannot help you setup the zone file on your server, on dedicated servers we only install the OS and Plesk, if it is ordered. Next, two 'Domain Hosts' must be registered. This is done through our system, if we are the domain registrar, by going to the 'Domain Host Summary' section of the domain manager in your godaddy account. Once the domain hosts are registered, then the domain hosts can be bound to the domain. This would be done in the 'Nameservers Summary' section of the domain manager. Using the two domain hosts add them to the domain by choosing 'Custom Name Servers' and then saving. This now makes all queries for DNS resolution of that domain go to the dedicated or virtual dedicated hosting server. ----------------- There is one fundomental issue I don't understand, How can I set up different hosts when I only have one box? my IP is: 216.69.164.46 domain: aishlist.com If I want to have 2 nameserveres on my box, for example: ns1.aishlist.com ns2.aishlist.com and mail.aishlist.com as my mail exchanger. How do I set this up all on one host, on the same machine? Please, Please help Many thanks (even for just reading to this point) Tamara |

Or have you paid for the domain only?
with no ISP hosting at all? |
Thanks for your reply Billy,
I guess I really am a "newbie", since I don't even know how to ask my questions. What we have is a Linux dedicated server purchased from goDaddy, and a domain name: aishlist.com. Does that answer the question? (Sorry for being so "newbieish") Tamara |
Just wanted to add:
When I go to the page to register 2 domain hosts. I'm required to provide: <aHostname>.aishlist.com and an IP address. What IP address am I supposed to specify? Our server's IP address is: 216.69.164.46 (mask: 255.255.255.0) Another question: According to what they wrote to me. I'm supposed to set up my DNS/zone file and then to register the 2 domain hosts. or did I misunderstand this point? Thanks again (waiting for reply...) Tamara |
