Setting up a samba server

I've got an old AMD K62 300 with 96 MB of RAM and a 20GB HD. I'd like to set up a server which I can access from both my "main" machine (a 2.4 ghz running Mandrake 10) and a WIN2000 laptop.

Is "Samba" what I should be looking for? I really have no idea where to start, and any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm comfortable using Linux as a somewhat advanced user, but have very little experience compiling things and making much sense of the directory structure.

Windows to Linux is essentially Samba ...

You may use ssh to exchange files between your linux systems. Windows too can participate in this with the help of Putty (ssh client) and sshwindows as the ssh server on windows.

in addition to PuTty you can also install winSCP. it is a free sFTP GUI client for M$ that looks and feels a lot like cuteFTP. that is what i use instead of setting up a samba server just becase i have not figured out how to get samba to make RH9 and winXP talk to each other. or permisions or something is fubar on my end.

with putty i can controll my RH box, and with winSCP i can move files from either end. i can push and pull files and it is secure and extreemly fast.
