Setting Up a New Machine, need help installing applications: Mysequel & Apache

Hi.

I'm a broadcasting student learning about IT stuff on the side. My work study boss said i should try to get a linux computer up and running. I have no experience in linux. i am generally a windows user.

I have a Dell Optiplex running openSUSE ver.10.3 with Kernel LInus 2.6.22.17-0.1 and GNOME 2.20.0

I have SUSE up and running and I'm trying to add the following applications:

-MySequel
-Apache
-1 to 10 (use to be called 1 to 10, not sure what it is referred to now)

If you could:

1) Explain to me what this program actually does?
2) Where do i download the files from?
3) How do i "install" it?
4) How do i run it?

If you could either point me in the right direction by linking me to a website or another forum thread or answer it yourself it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

apache (the worlds most popular web server) and mysql (NOT mysequel) (the worlds most popular open source database) will be available within YaST which is in your desktop administration menus.

How do i access them in YaST?

Open a terminal and enter 'whereis apache2' and 'whereis mysql' to see if they are installed. If they are, go to Yast to configure. If they are not installed, go to Yast to download and install.

In opensuse, click on the lizard (lower left corner of taskbar), and just type 'yast' in the search window at the top. Or you can click the lizard, hold the mouse arrow over applications, click on 'system', click on 'configuration' then click 'administrator settings'. You will get a pop-up window asking for root password. Enter the password and Yast will open. Apache is under Network Services in the left window, click it and then click Http Server in the right window and read and follow the steps.

If you haven't installed apache or mysql before, I would recommend doing some reading before trying to set them up. There is a tremendous amount of information available for both on-line.
