setting up a mail server

Hi,

I am setting up a mailserver with fedora core 3 on a mysql server that should be able to handle a lot of users and be secure. Since my linux experience is very limited I really dont know where to start.

what i need is:

*webmail client should be able to be used
*both pop3 and IMAP
*easy to administrate
*storage on a mysql database
*virus protection
* spam protection
*users should be able to create their own accounts easily

What i found so far:

*postfix and cyrus seems to be a good combination, or?
*squirrelmail seems to be a good webmail
*some howtos, but no one that fits my needs :\

And now to my questions:

*what software is needed to make this possible? is postfix and cyrus IMAPD
enough? FC3 includes these? versions?
*Is there any howto that is very thourough for this constilation?
*where do i start? installing postfix and configuring that?
*Is there a way to test the server without my own domain? I have a machine with fedora installed for laborating purpose

thanks for reading this

Hiya

Horde is a really good (AFAIK) webmail service. It is opensource, and loads of sites use it.

A lot of people seem to be wanting to set up a mail server at the moment. There have been a lot of posts about this recently on LQ. Search a bit.

thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the tip.

I´ve been looking in LQ and found several posts about e-mail servers, but i dont find answer to all my questions. I´ve seen howto´s about setting up a similar system but not on a FC3, any difference between these?

so lets say i manage to configure postfix and cyrus, how can i test the functionality without having a domain present?

i dont know if you have considered qmail ? if you go to www.qmailrocks.org you'll find an in depth tutorial on how to set up your email server for fedora. I think you will need to get a domain so you can test it, not 100% sure though. hope this helps

Hi,

I have read some about qmail and i havent got a good impression of it. Since this server is meant to be for a company, a small one but still a company, I need it to be very stable and secure. What I´ve found so far postfix/cyrus seems to be the the most reliable constilation. Right now im trying to setup this on a test-computer.
One thing i havent found any answers to is if there is any easy interface for managing accounts? so that users can create and manage acounts by themselves.

Thanks for the tip though

i have a small server set up in my house that is serving a web page and email. I have only been using linux for 3 years and it was not to difficult to find info on the net. I am running Mandrake 9.1 on the server using Apache and postfix and imap. I don't believe that users would be able to set up there own accounts because that would require root access. As for a domain, you can use a DNS service as I did. Look at Dyn Dns. You can also check the server just by opening a browser and typing in the isp address of the server. You can see the page on my server at this address If the server is up and running correctly you will get the default Apache page that you can replace with your own content. Hope this helps.

Detailed instructions from start to finish can be found here.

http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/ma...er_config.html

and use squirrelmail for the web client.

problems

hi,

have configured postfix and cyrus-imapd according to this but some problems have come up.

trying using the "mail whatever@whatever.com" makes the following fatal errors occure in the maillog:
".................. sendmail[xxxxxx]: j23........ to whatever@whatever.com ctladdr = cyrus, delay=00.00.00 xdelay=00.00.00 mailer=relay pri=0034 relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1] dsn=4.0.0,
stat=deferred: connection refused by [127.0.0.1]

i just cant figure it out, anybody who haves any suggestions.
