Setting up a file server

I have an old pentium II 300MHz with 64MB of RAM and a 40GB 7200 Maxtor HD. I wanted to use it to store files so that I can access them from remote locations.

I am new to linux and I was wondering what would be the best distribution of linux to use for this old box and what I needed to do to set it up to securely serve files. Any links to other sites or what to search for, because I'm not really sure about that either, would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
