Setting gateway permanently through console on MD9.2

Hi guys, thanks in advance for your help; Im still very green when it comes to the Linux world. Ive got a webserver running Mandrake 9.2 with a single ethernet adapter and public IP address. I tried using the GUI tool to configure my ethernet, but the gateway didnt stick. Even defining the gateway in a console session (even that command escapes me at the moment) would only last until the network or computer was rebooted. What am I missing?

Welcome to LQ. Try setting:
GATEWAY=ip.of.gateway.here

in:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
