setting display after chroot

hey there,
i'm having a problem after chrooting on my machine. as soon as i do it, i can no longer get anything graphical to display. for instance, i can run emacs or java programs before chrooting, but as soon as i do i get this error:

Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of DISPLAY variable.

any help? i am running Knoppix 3.3. actually, i've never understood this problem, even when it happened and i hadn't chrooted, so any help would be great.

thanks,
skiz
